Hip and Ridge Capping

Shingle Capping

After your roof has been completed with GAF Timberline HD shingles, we need to finish the roof by adding a shingle capping on the hips and ridges of your deck. We have two different GAF products we use, Seal-A-Ridge and Timbertex, were going to tell you about both of these products and which one you should choose.

Hip and Ridge Capping
Engineered Hip & Ridge Capping

Traditionally, capping has be done by using a 25 year shingle, or AKA 3 tab, as a hip and ridge cap shingle. We don’t use 25 year shingle anymore as there are better products available that are pre-cut and engineered to better protect the high stress areas of your roof, hip and ridge. the other issue with using a 25 year shingle as capping is that it isn’t rated to last as long as the rest of your roof. This 25 year capping will deteriorate faster than the rest of your roof and leave you having to replace it or even worse getting leaks. We don’t want these issues, especially myself as a contractor I’m not going to try and save myself a few dollars on materials and put your home at risk for leaks.

So that being said its always important to match both your GAF shingle with a GAF engineered shingle capping. So now that we match these products we will have better protection at the hips and ridges, better wind rating, and the colour will match perfectly. both of these products allow us to achieve a more uniform look as they are cut in the factory and not with a knife on site. Both Seal-A-Ridge and Timbertex have stain guard protection against unsightly algae. These products both ensure your roofs integrity and curb appeal, both very important.

Seal-A-Ridge. This is a GAF product specifically designed to match all Timberline HD shingle colours. so if you choose a charcoal Timberline HD, we would use charcoal Seal-A-Ridge, the colours match perfectly because its the same colour products used. Seal-A-Ridge uses the same sealant as used on the Timberline HD shingle, Dura Grip. This adhesive is durable, flexible, and tough. This is advanced technology GAF has designed to keep the shingles sealed and protect against wind driven rain and wind. I have to say its the best sealant I have seen on any shingle and thats another reason why I choose to install GAF Timberline HD. Here is a video worth watching about Dura grip.

TimberTex. This is a premium GAF engineered hip and ridge capping. Timbertex has the same Dura grip adhesive and is thicker by 195%. It will provide your roof with superior protection and a more distinctive up scale look. Because Timbertex is thicker your roof lines will be more distinctive and will add more curb appeal to your home. Timbertex is a great premium product to add to your roof.

So which one is right for you? If you want to add the ultimate curb appeal and protection to your roof, then Timbertex is your choice. Timbertex will also make your roof stand out from your neighbours and it can be a great selling feature as well. Seal-A-Ridge is a great choice for any roof, it is GAF engineered and will protect your roof and look great. Both products are do there job well, and most of all they complete your GAF roofing system.
