Deciding on your roofing contractor is a big decision. You want the best contractor, with the right credentials. This article is going to help you with building your roofing contractor must haves, or what we’re going to call, your roofing contractor checklist.
- Insurance. This should be your first checkmark before looking any further. The contractor you hire should carry the proper insurance to protect his employees and you as a homeowner. The contractor should always carry Government required insurance, and company liability insurance. This is the most important feature to have in a contractor because this protects you the property owner in the event that any worker gets hurt. It is also your right to ask the contractor to present his or her insurance to you so you can be sure they are up to date and have the proper insurance requirements. In our case we carry WSIB clearance, and two million dollar liability, and we show every property owner we give a quote both of these documents.
- Manufacturer Certification. This a key component to your roofing contractor checklist because it shows you your contractor is invested in their craftsmanship and a manufacturer holds them accountable to a higher standard of roofing craftsmanship. With a certified roofing contractor also comes better warranties for you the homeowner. Longer, non-prorated manufacturer warranties are only available with a manufacturer certified roofing contractor. One thing to remember these warranties do cost a couple extra dollars on the bill, but nothing significant compared to the invest you all ready have in your new roofing system installation.
- Community. This is a great way to determine if the contractor you’re calling is reputable and a lasting contractor. How is your contractor involved in the community, do you see signs and advertising in your community? A lasting reputable contractor will have available advertising in the community. How about reviews? a roofing company embedded into the community will have great customer reviews from local property owners, read about their service, craftsmanship and other positive experiences your local community has had. In our case we have a large number of 5 star google reviews from local property owners in St. Thomas Ontario. We have local signage and are a member of the St. Thomas Chamber of Commerce.
These are three great points to add to your roofing contractor checklist. As a roofing contractor myself I know what is important to look for in a quality contractor. Of course these attributes will not be the cheapest but they will be the most reliable and hassle free.
